Visitor information
Classic two-day visit
Begin with Dongzha in the morning to experience Wuzhen's original water-town atmosphere. Continue to Xizha in the afternoon for museums, lanes, shops and a sculling boat ride. Stay overnight inside Xizha to enjoy the illuminated canals after day visitors leave.
On the second day, explore Xizha at a slower pace or book the early-morning waterside market breakfast experience before departure.
Family holiday
A family-friendly route is Dongzha -> Wu Village -> Xizha. Dongzha introduces local history and folk culture, Wu Village provides outdoor and hands-on experiences for children, and Xizha offers comfortable accommodation, night walks and classic canal scenery.
The advantage of Wuzhen for families is flexibility. Adults can enjoy architecture, exhibitions and evening views, while children can take part in farming, animal, craft and outdoor activities.

What is the difference between Dongzha and Xizha?
Dongzha is more focused on sightseeing and original local atmosphere, with residents still living in the area. Xizha is larger and more comprehensive, combining accommodation, night tours, cultural venues, leisure services and resort experiences.
Is it worth staying overnight?
Yes. Wuzhen is especially memorable in the early morning and after dark. Staying inside the scenic area makes it easier to experience the town before and after peak visiting hours.
Is a traditional boat ride recommended?
Yes. The view from the water is very different from walking through the lanes. Sunset and early evening are especially atmospheric times for a boat ride.
What local snacks are recommended?
Popular options include Dingsheng cake, green rice balls, shredded radish pancakes, spring rolls and stinky tofu. Guests staying in Xizha can also book the early-morning waterside breakfast experience.
Is Wuzhen suitable for international visitors?
Yes. Wuzhen offers English guide services, English maps, multilingual signage, international payment support, free Wi-Fi, luggage transfer and shuttle services, making it relatively easy for international travellers to navigate.

Why Wuzhen
A deep historical foundation
With more than 1,300 years of town history, Wuzhen presents one of the most recognisable images of Jiangnan: bridges, canals, waterside homes, stone-paved lanes and traditional courtyard houses. It is a place where heritage can still be walked through, entered and experienced.
Tradition and contemporary culture
Wuzhen brings together folk traditions such as waterside markets, shadow puppetry, incense fairs, high-pole boat performances and martial arts boat performances with contemporary cultural programmes, art exhibitions, theatre festivals and international conferences.
A destination designed for staying
Wuzhen is best experienced slowly. Instead of treating it as a quick sightseeing stop, visitors can stay overnight, wake up beside the water, take part in the morning market, visit cultural venues in the afternoon, ride a traditional sculling boat at dusk and walk through the illuminated lanes after dark.
